Get involved

The organisation is the people who turn up.

We began by delivering programmes from our own homes on a volunteer basis, and the work still runs that way. Every course on this site exists because a neighbour offered to teach it.

  1. 01

    Teach a course

Every course here is taught by a neighbour. If you can teach English, sewing, computers, citizenship, art or drama — or tutor a child after school — you can run a class.

    Offer to teach
  2. 02

    Assist a class

Classes run better with a second pair of hands. Volunteers help with registration, childminding, translation and keeping a room welcoming.

    Give in kind

Our programme supplies, furniture and computers are donated. Space to meet in is the single thing we need most. If you have a room, equipment or materials, we can use them.

What we need most

A room, and someone who can teach in it.

The founding plan put space at the top of the list, and it has stayed there. Programme supplies, furniture and computers are donated and replaced only as funds allow.

  • A room we can use on a weekday evening or a Saturday morning.
  • Sewing machines, laptops and craft materials in working order.
  • Translators — particularly Arabic, but any language the neighbourhood speaks.
  • Someone to mind children while their parents are in a class.

Courses that need a teacher

If you can run any of these, say so.

These are the courses the organisation has run before. A course restarts the moment someone can teach it.

On funding

There is no donate button here, and that is deliberate.

The organisation funds itself through volunteerism, in-kind support, fundraising events and applications to private foundations and all three levels of government. We are not set up to receipt online donations, so we do not ask for them.

If you want to fund the work, call us and we will tell you what the current need is and how to give to it properly.
